Meet the Horses of Alisal Ranch
The Spirit of Alisal Ranch: Our Horses
Horses have long been at the heart of ranch life. They connect us to nature, teach us patience, and remind us to move with intention. Whether you are out on the trail or simply spending time at the barn, being around horses offers a unique sense of peace and partnership. They are part of the rhythm of ranch life, and for many guests, a highlight of every stay.
At Alisal Ranch, we believe that time spent with these incredible animals creates memories that last a lifetime. With wide-open trails, experienced wranglers, and horses matched thoughtfully to each rider, it is easy to see why so many guests return year after year for our riding experiences.
We’ve highlighted a few fan favorites in our herd below! Come meet them in person—each one has a unique personality that’s sure to steal your heart. Be sure to stop by the barn the next time you’re at the ranch!
Bobalou
If you have ever spotted an especially tall horse on our property, chances are it was Bobalou. This impressive shire cross stands at 18.2 hands high, making him the tallest member of our herd. At just 7 years old, Bobalou combines youthful energy with a gentle, willing nature that riders quickly fall in love with.
He came to Alisal Ranch from Arizona alongside his best friend, Fox. Together, they have become beloved members of our herd. Bobalou’s size is matched only by his kind spirit, making him a standout for riders who appreciate both strength and softness in a horse.
Loki
Loki is one of our most highly requested horses, especially by experienced riders looking for an unforgettable ride. This black quarter horse and Arabian cross is known for his incredibly smooth gait. When he lopes, it is often described as feeling like “butter”: easy, flowing, and effortless.
Loki is a favorite for advanced riders who want to enjoy the thrill of a good lope while still feeling balanced and secure. He has close friendships with two other horses in the herd, Jack and Bear, and you will often see them together during downtime at the barn. Loki’s personality is as steady as his gait, and he brings confidence to every ride.
Kenny
Kenny is a key favorite amongst our youngest guests! This 27-year-old sorrel pony is gentle, kind and perfectly suited for little ones riding to breakfast or trying their first trot on the trail.
One of the most recognizable things about Kenny is he always sticks out his tongue. This silly attribute brings smiles to many faces at the barn and keeps the kids giggling down the trail.
The Benefits of Horseback Riding
Horseback riding offers more than just a scenic view of the ranch. It is a full-body activity that engages the mind, builds confidence, and deepens your connection with nature. Whether you are a first-time rider or have been in the saddle for years, spending time with horses has a way of grounding you in the present moment.
Riding helps improve balance, posture, and coordination as you move with the rhythm of your horse. It builds core strength and encourages gentle flexibility, all while providing a sense of calm and focus. Horses also have a unique ability to reflect our energy, which teaches patience, trust, and communication without words.
These benefits come with the added bonus of breathtaking trails, fresh air, and the quiet magic of the Santa Ynez Valley. Every ride is a chance to slow down, take in your surroundings, and experience the land in an unforgettable way.
