The Phantoms of Highway 246

One of the eeriest legends in the Santa Ynez Valley is that of the phantoms along Highway 246. According to local lore, travelers on this highway have reported seeing ghostly apparitions wandering the road, believed to be the spirits of those who met tragic ends in car accidents. These phantoms are often seen late at night, vanishing as quickly as they appear. To learn more about this story visit the Santa Maria Sun.

The Vampire Who Inhabited Mission Santa Inés

One of the most chilling stories in the Santa Ynez Valley is that of the vampire who allegedly inhabited Mission Santa Inés. Built in 1804, the mission is a historical landmark with its own dark tale. According to legend, a vampire terrorized the area, preying on unsuspecting villagers and hiding within the mission’s walls. Visitors have reported sightings of a shadowy figure with glowing eyes and an overwhelming sense of dread near the mission at night. To learn more about this story visit Petticoats & Pistols.

The Haunting of Mattei’s Tavern

Mattei’s Tavern, a historic landmark in Los Olivos, has its share of ghostly tales. Established in 1886, it served as a popular stagecoach stop and hotel. Over the years, guests and staff have reported unexplained occurrences, from mysterious footsteps and doors opening on their own to sightings of apparitions in period clothing. The most famous ghost is a woman in a white gown, who is said to keep a watchful eye on the tavern. To learn more about this story visit Weird California.
