New to the Saddle? You Are in the Right Place

You do not need years of riding experience to enjoy horseback riding at Alisal Ranch. Before each ride, our wranglers consider every guest’s experience and comfort level to help match them with the right horse and riding group.

Our signature two-hour scenic trail rides are offered for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders, so everyone can explore at a pace that feels comfortable. Prefer a ride that is all your own? Reserve a private horseback ride, with one- and two-hour options tailored to your skills and interests.

Experienced riders looking to cover more ground can join the Distance Ride, which heads into more remote areas of the ranch in search of farther trails and bigger views.

Choose Your Horseback Adventure

No two rides at Alisal have to feel the same. Start with a classic trail ride, plan a private outing or saddle up for one of our distinctly Alisal traditions.

One longtime favorite is the Breakfast Ride, which follows the trail to historic Adobe Camp for a western-style breakfast beneath the sycamores. Flapjacks hot off the griddle, eggs, bacon, coffee and cowboy poetry make an early wake-up call well worth it.

The Picnic Ride pairs a scenic ride with lunch in a peaceful setting, with possible destinations including Alisal Lake, the historic Adobe or Proposal Point overlooking the Santa Ynez Valley. Consider it the ranch version of lunch with a view.

Little Riders Are Welcome, Too

A child’s first time in the saddle can easily become a favorite memory from a family vacation.

Children ages 7 and older can join trail rides, while younger guests can start closer to the barn. Corral lessons introduce children ages 4 to 6 to the basics with a wrangler by their side. Complimentary lead-around rides give children under 7 a gentle and memorable first horseback experience.

Along the way, young riders can build confidence, learn respect for horses and discover just how exciting ranch life can be.

What to Wear on the Trail

There is no need to buy a whole new western wardrobe, although we would not blame you if you did. For a comfortable day on the trail, bring:

• Closed-toe shoes or riding boots
• Comfortable jeans or long pants
• Lightweight layers for changing morning and afternoon temperatures
• Sunscreen and sunglasses
• A full-brimmed hat with a stampede string, if you plan to ride in it

Book Your Rides Before You Arrive

Horseback rides are among Alisal’s most popular experiences, and space is limited. Guests may contact the Ranch Concierge team within 45 days of arrival to start planning their itinerary and reserve their must-do rides.

When signing up, be prepared to share each rider’s age, height, weight and experience level. This information helps our wranglers find the right horse and riding group for every guest. On the day of your ride, plan to arrive at the barn 15 minutes early so there is plenty of time to get ready.
